Q.1. There are two voices in the poem. Who do they belong to? Which lines indicate this? (The Voice of The Rain Question Answer)

Ans. One voice is of the poet who asks the questions, and second one is the voice of the rain, which gives answers. The lines that indicate this are :-

And who art thou? said I to the soft falling shower,

I am the Poem of Earth, said the voice of the rain.

Q.2. What does the phrase ‘strange to tell’ mean? (The Voice of The Rain Question Answer)

Ans. It means that the poet is astonished by the voice of rain, by the fact that the rain chose to answer him.

Q.3. There is a parallel drawn between rain and music. Which words indicate this? Explain the similarity between the two.

Ans. The words that indicate this are:

(i) I am the poem of Earth- The rain has been compared to a poem which is also a song.

(ii) Soft-falling shower – When the rain falls, it makes soft sounds like in a song or music.

(iii) The voice of the rain – This itself is a musical sound.

Q.4. How is the cyclic movement of the rain brought out in the poem? Compare it with what you have learnt in science.

Ans. The rain rises in the form of water vapour from the land and water bodies. It moves upwards, where it cools and takes the form of raindrops. These drops, in the form of rain, fall back on the earth, its place of origin.

It is exactly what science tells us about the water cycle. The heat of the sun evaporates water, changes it into water vapour. Then water vapour rises, and on cooling, condensation takes place and it falls back on the earth in the form of rain.

Q.5. Why are the last two lines put within brackets? (The Voice of The Rain Question Answer)

Ans. The last two lines are put within brackets because they do not form the voice of the rain or the poet. They only contain a general observation made by the poet about the course of a song.

Q.6. List the pairs of opposites found in the poem.

Ans.

  • rise : descend
  • day: night
  • Reck’d : unreck’d

The Voice of The Rain Extra Questions Class 11

Direction:- Read The Voice of The Rain Extra Questions and answer them in about 30-40 words each.

Q.1. Why does the rain say that it is ‘eternal’?

Ans. The cycle of the rain is never-ending. It is a natural phenomenon. It rises in the form of water vapours out of the land and the bottomless sea. It rises towards the sky, and after cooling down, it falls back on the earth as showers, which is the place of its origin.

Q.2. Do you think the rain is being boastful? Give a reason for your answer.

Ans. No, the rain is not boasting, it is merely stating natural facts. Without rain, all the seeds lying hidden in the earth will not sprout and remain there forever. The dirt, the layers of dust, the droughts will never go away, and earth will never become pure or regain its beauty.

Q.3. Behind the apparent simplicity, the poem hides a deep meaning. What message does the poet convey to the reader?

Ans. Whitman portrays the cyclic nature of the rain. Through its process, the poet shows that the rain gives back life to its own originator. Similarly, we’re the creation of earth and should do the same.

Q.4. The poem is a celebration of life itself. How does the poet bring about a feeling of happiness and fulfilment?

Ans. The rain washes off dust and helps plants to grow when it falls on earth. It is a source of joy. It beautifies and purifies the earth. It originates from the earth and comes back to it with love, after fulfilling its task.

Q.5. Why does the rain call itself as the song of the earth?

Ans. The rain too, like a beautiful song, wanders here and there, brings happiness and peace all around and ultimately returns to its originator. It nourishes life on earth. Every creation of God awaits rain. The rain fulfils the desire of man.
