Q.1. Do you think that the third level was a medium of escape for Charley? Why? (Page 7)

Ans. Charley lived in a modern world full of worries tensions and insecurities. He had a deep yearning for peace and tranquillity. He wanted to escape to a place of his choice which can provide him solace. So Charley wanders into the third level, an imaginary place across the boundaries of time and space to escape from the busy city life.

Q.2. What do you infer from Sam’s letter to Charley? (Page 7)

Ans. Sam’s letter is a result of Charley’s imagination. We can understand from the fact that the letter was a first-day cover and was sent to his grandfather. First-day covers carry only empty letters and are not opened. But Charley opens that first-day cover-dated 11th July 1894 and finds Sam’s letter in it. This proves that Sam’s letter is completely imaginary.

Q.3. “The modern world is full of insecurity, fear, war worry, and stress.” What are the ways in which we can overcome them? (Page 7)

Ans. We live in a world full of insecurity, fear, wars worries, and stress. These conditions make us uneasy. So, We try to escape from reality by imagining our past. Because we think that our past was free from insecurity, fear, and worries. We adopt hobbies like stamp collection, watching comic shows, playing with children, etc.

Q.4 Do you see an intersection of time and space in the story?

Ans. The story ‘The Third Level’ continually moves between the past and the present. Charley, the protagonist, imagines a world of his childhood that exists in 1894. Though he lives in New York. He finds this modern world very insecure, full of worries, wars, and fear. In his yearning for a peaceful place, he narrates his story about his journey to his past. Thus, there is obviously an intersection of time and space in the story.

Q.5. Apparent illogicality sometimes turns out to be a futuristic projection. Discuss. (Page 7)

Ans. It is true that whenever we are in a stressful state, we imagine illogical situations. As Charley imagines himself in the world of 1894. It is a world that is full of peace where people live in harmony. They are free from the worries of the modern world. This seems quite illogical to us because no one can go into his past. It is the result of his illogical thinking due to a stressful situation.

Q.5. Philately helps to keep the past alive. Discuss other ways in which this is done. What do you think of the human tendency to constantly move between the past, the present, and the future? (Page 7)

Ans. Philately is a hobby of collecting stamps. Stamp collection does keep the past alive. Other ways are a collection of photographs, old books, newspaper cuttings, CDs, letters, coins, etc. The human mind does keep flickering in the past, the present, and the future. Thinking about the past, he forgets the realities of the present and at times feels disappointed. The present presents problems that need to be tackled immediately and future projections are generally full of wishes. This kind of quick transition through time sometimes brings relief, peace, and satisfaction and might discourage and frustrate at other times.

Q.6. You have read Adventure’ by Jayant Narlikar. Compare the interweaving of fantasy and reality in both stories.

Ans. Both the stories mentioned above are science fiction dealing with time travel. Narlikar’s story proves that reality is not only limited to what we see. Even alternative worlds can exist. Gangadhar Pant could experience both worlds together.

In this story, Charley uses the third level of Grand Central station to move to the leisurely and beautiful old world of 1894 in Galesburg from the stress and strain of living in New York.
