2. The story hinges on a particular historical event.

3. Rajendra Deshpande was a historian.

4. The places mentioned in the story are all imaginary.

5. The story tries to relate history to science.

Ans. The second statement is true because the story talks about one incident in the course of history, that is, the Battle of Panipat.

The fifth statement is true because the story related history to science through Rajendra’s explanation of the events that had taken place with Gangadharpant.

Statements 1, 3 and 4 are false.

II. Briefly explain the following statements from the text.

Q.1. “You neither travelled to the past nor to the future. You were in the present experiencing a different world.”

Ans. Every point in time creates a possibility of the existence of different realities.

According to Rajendra Deshpande, Professor Gaitonde made a transition from the world we live in, to a parallel world. He neither travelled to the past nor to the future. He experienced two worlds, one at a time. Though he was there in the present, he experienced a different version of reality that had the power to change the course of history.

Q.2. “You have passed through a fantastic experience: or more correctly, a catastrophic experience.” (The Adventure Class 11 Questions and Answers)

Ans. Rajendra Deshpande explained the catastrophe theory by showing how one incident affects the other. A little deviation in any action can lead to an entirely different outcome. Here, the Battle of Panipat won by Vishwasrao changed the whole course of history.

Q.3. Gangadharpant could not help comparing the country he knew with what he was witnessing around him. (The Adventure Class 11 Questions and Answers)

Ans. While reading the alternate version of history, Gangadharpant realised the way history had shaped the present. He knew that India, which had seen the decline of Peshwas and experienced the slavery of the British. He compared that knowledge with the country he was witnessing around him. India as he was seeing, was never colonized by the British. It had learnt to stand on its feet and knew what self-respect was.

Q.4 “The lack of determinism in quantum theory!” (The Adventure Class 11 Questions and Answers)

Ans. Rajendra explains the lack of determinism in quantum theory. He draws a parallel between the electrons orbiting the nucleus whose position cannot be predicted and the transition made by Gangadharpant from one world to another. Unlike planets, the movement of electrons cannot be determined. The transition can take place at any time.

Q.5 “You need some interaction to cause a transition.” (The Adventure Class 11 Questions and Answers)

Ans. According to Rajendra, for the transition to take place, there needs to be a common point. The common point in the professor’s case was what he was thinking about before the collision with the truck took place. He was thinking about the catastrophe theory and its implications for war. The topic of his thousandth presidential address was based on the turn in the course of history had the Battle of Panipat gone the other way.
