Mother’s Day Summary– This play is a humorous portrayal of the mother’s status in a family. It attempts to show what would happen if a mother rebels and demands her rights. The play was written in the 1950s and is a plea for recognition of the role of a mother.
Mrs Pearson, a woman in her forties, is a pleasant but anxious person. Her neighbor. Mrs Fitzgerald, is much more assertive. She always tells Mrs Pearson not to allow her family to bully her. Mrs Fitzgerald suggests that they should exchange their personalities.
This will lead Mrs Pearson to look like Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs Fitzgerald to look like Mrs Pearson. Mrs Pearson gets up to leave because she thinks that this will make her family resent her. But Mrs Fitzgerald catches hold of Mrs Pearson, not allowing her to protest. She makes Mrs Pearson believe that this is the right thing to do and mutters- Arshtatta dum Arshtatta Lam-Arshtatta Lamdumbona.
A change takes place, Mrs Pearson becomes bold and dominating like Mrs Fitzgerald, and Mrs Fitzgerald becomes anxious and nervous like Mrs Pearson.
In the second scene, Mrs Pearson, who is actually Mrs Fitzgerald, waits for her family. She starts smoking and laying cards on the table. Doris, Pearson’s daughter, rushes in. She is shocked to see her mother smoking a cigarette. Mrs Pearson refuses to make tea for Doris and makes fun of Charlie Spence, Doris’ date, by calling him half-witted and buck-teeth. Doris starts crying and leaves. Her son, Cyril, walks in and is in hurry to go out.
Mrs Pearson refuses to make tea for him or get his clothes ready. She declares she hates mending and tells him, that like him, she wouldn’t do anything which she doesn’t like. Mrs Pearson tells her children that she will work for 40 hours a week and will take two days off. Her husband, George Pearson, is surprised to see her drinking. He is terribly hurt when Mrs Pearson tells him that people at the club laugh at him behind his back and call him ‘Pompy-Ompy Pearson’.
In the next scene, Mrs Fitzgerald, who is actually Mrs Pearson, comes in to find out if things are all right in her home. She is flustered to see the way real Mrs Fitzgerald is treating her family. She can’t see her family in this miserable state. Hence, she requests Mrs Fitzgerald to change back to their original personalities. They change back to their original selves and Mrs Fitzgerald leaves, warning Mrs Pearson not to be lenient again.
In the last scene – Doris, Cyril and George come in, looking anxious. They are much relieved to see the real Mrs Pearson smile at them. They agree to stay at home and play a game of rummy with her. She decides that after the game, Doris and Cyril will prepare the supper, and she will have a talk with her husband, George. (Mother’s Day Summary)
