Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer

Answer the following Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer in about 30-40 words each.

Q.1. (i) Contrast the Chinese view of art with the European view with examples.

Ans. The Chinese view of art stands in contrast with the European view of art. Art in Europe is about the realistic depiction of life. The Chinese painting is not meant to reproduce an actual view; it is not an imitation. For example, Wu Daozi dealt with the idea of spirit through his painting, whereas the fly painted by Quinten Metsys looked so life-like that he admitted Quinten Metsys as an apprentice.

Q.1.(ii) Explain the concept of shanshui. (Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer)

Ans. Shanshui means mountain-water which represents the word landscape. The universe is composed of the two complementary poles of the universe- Yin and Yang. Yin is the water, horizontal and resting on the earth. Yang is the mountain, reaching vertically towards Heaven.

Q.2. (i) What do you understand by the terms ‘outsider art’ and ‘art brut’ or ‘raw art’?

Ans. Outsider art, art brut, or raw art refers to the art of the untrained visionary. Art made by artists, who have no formal training, yet show talent and artistic insight, is called outsider art.

Q.2 (ii) Who was the “untutored genius who created a paradise” and what is the nature of his contribution to art?

Ans. Nek Chand, the creator-director of Rock Garden in Chandigarh is known as the untutored genius who created a paradise. The Rock Garden is made of stone and recycled material.

TALKING ABOUT THE TEXT

Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer

Answer the following Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer in about 100-120 words each.

Q.1. “The Emperor may rule over the territory he has conquered, but only the artist knows the way within.” Explain

Ans. The Emperor is the ruler of a kingdom. He has the authority and power to govern it. But it is only an artist who understands the nature of the world that the Emperor rules. This idea is brought up in the tale about Wu Daozi’s painting. Wu Daozi was commissioned by the Emperor to paint a landscape. The emperor, in awe of the painting, appreciated only its outer appearance.

According to the painter, a spirit dwelled in the cave of the painting at the foot of the mountain. The painter clapped his hand to show the Emperor the inner beauty of the painting. The entrance to the cave opened and both the artist and the painting vanished forever.

This shows that the artist had a spiritual insight and understood the workings of mysterious ways of the universe. Only the artist knew the path and the method of liberation from the framework of the body that the Emperor failed to acquire. Therefore, the author says that it is only the artist who knows the way within the territory that the Emperor has conquered.

Q.2. “The landscape is an inner one, a spiritual and conceptual space.” Explain. (Landscape of The Soul Question And Answer)

Ans. There is a stark contrast between the Chinese and the European paintings. European art tries to achieve a perfect illusionistic likeness. It tries to imitate the visible reality. The Chinese view of art is an in-depth one. It deals with what lies beneath the layer of paint that cannot be seen, only understood. It does not reproduce an actual view.

Chinese art is not meant to be looked at from a single viewpoint. One can enter the painting from any point and travel through it. It requires the active participation of the viewer which is both physical and mental. Understanding Chinese painting is not only about seeing it but also about entering the painter’s mind. Therefore the landscape is a spiritual one. It is the conceptual space that requires the viewer’s understanding.
