Q.1 Why is Raj Kumar Shukla described as being resolute?
Answer: Raj Kumar Shukla wanted Gandhi to visit Champaran. Gandhi had many appointments in different parts of India. Raj Kumar accompanied Gandhi everywhere until Gandhi fixed a date. That is why he is described as being resolute.

Answer: The peasants had to grow indigo on the fifteen percent area of their land. They paid their whole indigo harvest to the Portish landlords as rent.
The landlords had known that Germany had developed synthetic indigo and indigo harvest was not now profitable. So, they wanted compensation to free them from their commitment. The prices of natural indigo would go down with the arrival of synthetic indigo.

Answer: Gandhi faced a lot of problems during his work for which he had come to Champaran. The commission of Tirhut bullied him and ordered him to leave Tirhut but Gandhi didn’t move. He was served a notice to leave Champaran immediately but he disobeyed the order. As a result, Gandhi was asked to appear in the court the next day, Thousands of peasants came in support of Gandhi. Gandhi helped the authorities in maintaining law and order. In court, he pleaded guilty and asked for punishment. All these events. show his ideas of satyagraha and non-violence.

Answer: Gandhi agreed to a settlement of 25 percent because he wanted to prove that the landlords were not above the law. The peasants had their rights and defenders. The landlords had to return a part of the money with a part of their prestige.

Answer: The Champaran episode was a turning point in Gandhi’s life because it marked his first victory of Civil Disobedience in modern India. It was the first mass movement in India. He fought against the injustice of the cruel landlords. The movement grew out of Gandhi’s attempt to remove the distress of thousands of poor peasants. It was a typical Gandhian movement. This episode emerged as the first ray of hope for the Indians. All above, the Champaran episode was the beginning of their liberation from fear of the British.

Answer: The role of the lawyers in the Champaran movement was quite significant. Gandhi went to Muzzafarpur where he met the lawyers. They briefed him about the peasants’ cases in court. Gandhi scolded the lawyers for collecting that much fee from the poor peasants. Gandhi said that law courts were useless if the peasants were so crushed and fear-stricken. At Motihari, when the lawyers said that they would go home if Gandhi was sentenced to prison.
Gandhi commented that it would be an injustice to the peasants. The lawyers noticed that despite being a stranger, Gandhi was ready to go to jail for the peasants. They felt ashamed. At last, they were ready to follow him into jail. That shows how Gandhi was able to influence the lawyers.

Answer: The attitude of the average Indian in smaller localities was quite indifferent and evasive. They were afraid to show sympathy for advocates of home rule. Gandhi brought the average Indian away from this isolation and indifference. Gandhi stayed for two days in the home of Professor Malkani. It was quite a courageous and extraordinary thing in those days to give shelter to a person like Gandhi. The average Indian in smaller localities were so afraid of the British government that they never dared to do so.
