Q.1. Does the poem talk of an exclusively personal experience or is it fairly universal?
Ans. No, the father’s sorrow is not entirely personal. All parents feel that there is a generation gap between them and their children. In spite of best intentions and efforts, parents are unable to bridge this gap. It increases their grief and adds to it a feeling of guilt. They think it is their failure that the children have been estranged from them. The irony is that both parents and children expect each other to make the first move, by asking for forgiveness first.
Q.2. How is the father’s helplessness brought out in the poem?
Ans. Every stanza expresses the father’s helplessness in covering the generation gap between him and his son. He thinks that he is responsible for this situation. He brought up the child with the seed of love and understanding, yet, somehow, they have lost that love. There is silence between them, a total lack of understanding, though they share the same house.
The father longs to rebuild the past relationship by forgiving his son. He tries to build on sorrow, and new love, yet he is left empty-handed. He stretches out his hand towards his son but in vain. They continue to live together but as strangers. The father wants to forgive his son but waits for him to ask for it himself. The poem is a moving portrait of a father’s grief and failure to come close to his son.
